Medical Oversight Provision by CPDM Faculty

CPDM faculty provide oversight to a number of prehospital care services. Our faculty includes two physicians with EMS fellowship training, a third with over 20 years of flight crew experience, and a paramedic with three decades' service in air and ground EMS, tactical medicine, and disaster response.

Air Medical Services

CPDM members provide medical and/or program direction for multiple helicopter services providing air transport across Oklahoma. Our EM residents have the opportunity to fly (on a volunteer basis) as crew members at some bases.

Ground EMS services

Ground EMS medical direction services are provided by CPDM faculty who work with the Oklahoma statewide public-service entity called the Medical Control Board (MCB). The MCB-Affiliated EMS System of Metropolitan Oklahoma City and Tulsa comprises the EMS Authority (EMSA), an ambulance-based EMS service, and a number of fire department-based prehospital care services. The MCB membership includes three OUDEM faculty; our faculty member have served in the MCB Chair position for the past 5 years.

Collectively, EMSA and the fire departments comprising the MCB system constitute one of the largest 15 EMS systems in the U.S. The system serves the metropolitan areas of Oklahoma City and Tulsa, covering approximately 1100 square miles and providing ambulance-based care and transport services to 1.6 million Oklahomans. EMSA receives an emergent request for medical services every 4.5 minutes, annually answering over 160,000 emergency medical calls and transporting over 120,000 patients to EDs.

Fire department-based prehospital care constitutes the other major portion of medical oversight provided by CPDM faculty. Fire services for which faculty provide medical oversight include:
